Friday night, I was awakened out of my slumber by a sharp pain on my bottom left jaw line. The pain was so intense it felt like someone had punched me in the jaw and then began to poke me with needles. Ouch!
I discussed symptom relieving remedies with my Facebook friends. I ended up using Motrin and clove oil.
Even though my over-the-counter remedies worked some, I suffered with recurring pain until my Monday morning dental appointment. After several X-rays, it was determined that my root canal molar had abscessed. This tooth was worked on five years prior at another dental office. I later found out the dentist removed 2 roots. However, this tooth had 3! So, all the pain was coming from the forgotten root which had gotten infected.
Two years prior, I found out this information, but was unable to rectify the situation because it would have cost $1,000…half that would be covered by dental insurance. During that time, I was prescribed an antibiotic to relieve the infection. I ended up having an allergic reaction to the antibiotic and was sick for 5 months, and I spent one week in the hospital. That was my first hospital stay. I was devastated.
Needless to say, I was not happy with having to encounter this abscessed tooth and my finances were still very limited. So, I sat in the dentist chair reveiwing the itemized and personalized cost list for my dilemma.
I was so overwhelmed that I cried uncontrollably for a moment because I really wanted to save my molar, but I wanted the endless saga of the forgotten irritated root to be over too. In addition, I am still experiencing limited funding no matter what option I chose.
If I extracted my tooth, I would have a noticeable gap in my wide smile. If I left the molar in, I would have to save up the funds to get it retreated and possibly run the risk of getting an abscess again. I couldn’t take the drama of this molar any longer. I was already $3K in the hole including my hospital visit.
I decided to extract the irritated tooth and began the path of healing… Later, I will decide how to fill the gap. Problem temporarily solved.
